Weight Loss Definitions, Terms and Acronyms:
  • Low-carbohydrate diets or low carb diets - food diet programs for weight loss and dietary health that advocate restricted carbohydrate consumption.
  • The Duodenal Switch (Bilio-Pancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch) - a procedure for weight loss surgery that alters the gastrointestinal tract with two approaches: a restrictive aspect and a malabsorptive aspect.
  • Trans fatty acid (commonly trans fat) - an unsaturated fatty acid with molecules that contain trans double bonds between carbon atoms, making the molecules less kinked compared with those of cis fat. Research suggests a correlation between diets high in trans fats and diseases like atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease.
  • Insoluble fiber food sources - include whole grain foods, bran, nuts and seeds, vegetables (green beans, cauliflower, zucchini, celery, etc.), the skins of some fruits including tomatoes.
  • Empty calories - the content of high-energy foods with poor nutritional content, typically from processed carbohydrates or fats, such as junk foods.
  • Guar gum - an ingredient in weight control pills determined by FDA to be unsafe for weight control
