Weight Loss Definitions, Terms and Acronyms:
  • Stimulants - used and sometimes abused to boost endurance and productivity as well as to suppress appetite for weight loss. Examples of stimulants are caffeine, amphetamines, ecstasy and cocaine.
  • Body for Life diet - six meals a day, each of which consists of a portion of a lean protein-rich food, a portion of an unrefined carbohydrate-rich food and a portion of a vegetable.
  • Fat blockers - substances which purport to physically absorb fat and mechanically interfere with the fat a person eats, have not been proven to be safe or effective by the FDA.
  • Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (VBG), also known as Stomach stapling, has been the most common restrictive operation for weight control. It limits the amount of food a patient can eat at one time and slows passage of the food.
  • Pritikin Diet - a low-fat, high carbohydrate diet similar to the Atkins diet, based on the theory that we have an instinct to eat fat that was developed in the early days of man. It is alleged that the ready availability of fat now causes us to instinctively overeat it.
  • Israeli Army Diet - a short-term weight loss fad diet that was popular in the 1970's, but had no connection with the Israeli Army.
